Alphabet letter rocks

I love collecting rocks, unscientifically, picking the ones I think are pretty!  If you engage in similar pursuits you know that eventually you run out of space to put these treasures.  I saw this idea on Mrs. Meyers Inquiring Minds blog and I believe it is Reggio inspired.  I was pleasantly surprised at how easy these were to make!  I gathered rocks from my collection and wrote on them with black and silver Sharpie permanent markers.  I tried to find rocks that were shaped a little like the letter I wrote on it.

I plan to have kids build their names and sight words with theses rocks, after they explore them.  I made multiples of the vowels and other common double letters like l, m & n.  The great thing is that they are versatile and can be easily incorporated into and outdoor station.  I can make more letters very easily and they are non polluting, so if they get lost outside, they are already natural materials.  I can replace them with minimal effort and resources!

We added number rocks this year with hopes to use them outdoors more activities pending!
